Trujillo

After leaving Piurra, I spent the better part of a day heading south along the coast through the dessert to Trujillo. Trujillo is a nice city about the size of Baltimore. The city itself is pleasant but not terribly exciting. However it has several ruins and Huanchaco, a nice beach close by, making it worth a stop. Just outside of the city are what remains of two very old pyramids built with adobe bricks: Huacas del Sol y de Luna (temples of the sun and the moon.) Both were built by the Moche people from 400 - 600 AD. Even better, on the other side of town was Chan Chan, a huge sprawling adobe city, built around 1300 by the Chimu people. I especially liked Chan Chan. It was a labrynth of passageways and rooms built entirely of mud bricks just sitting out in the dessert. It felt like something from Saharan Africa or the middle east. Very cool.
